Energy Optimization in a Paper Mill Enabled by a Three-Site Energy Cooperation

Although there are opportunities to reduce electrical energy demand in unit processes of mechanical pulp-based paper and paperboard production, this may not be financially beneficial. This is generally because optimization connected reduced refiner electricity pulping systems also results less steam available for the drying paper. As modern high consistency produce approximately one ton each MWh when producing pulp, a reduction electric leads increased fuel boilers compensate shortage. In study, we investigated what financial environmental situation would look like if were expand system border from mill larger consisting or mill, district heating with an incineration boiler chemical pulp mill. Mechanical production has wood product yield >90%, separate woodchips net producer heat while 50%, low due combustion dissolved polymers. The aim research create useful robust models how use excess certain industry sites cover shortage other by means utilizing optimizing connecting these sites. For purpose, used simulation tool which dynamically allows us evaluate different scenarios. Our shows that great potential both carbon dioxide emissions costs society tools.
